Shoe Obsession at The Fashion Institute of Technology

Shoe Obsession examines our culture’s ever-growing fascination with extravagant and fashionable shoes. In fact, designer shoes have overtaken “It” bags as the most coveted fashion accessories. In response, shoe departments in major department stores have undergone significant expansions, and the “great designer shoe wars” have escalated. Shoes by established designers such as Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin continue to be bestsellers, while the number of rising stars within the footwear industry is multiplying. Over the past decade, heels have reached new heights —as have prices. High-heeled shoes—the fashion shoes of the 21st century—have become so tall that even a 4-inch heel is considered “low.”

Shoe Obsession will feature approximately 150 examples of contemporary footwear, highlighting the extreme, lavish, and imaginative styles that have made shoes central to fashion. The exhibition will include work by prominent footwear labels such as Manolo Blahnik, Salvatore Ferragamo, Christian Louboutin, and Roger Vivier, as well as shoes from influential design houses, including Azzedine Alaïa, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, and Prada. Avant-garde designers such as Kei Kagami and Noritaka Tatehana—who have made some of the most extreme shoes of the 21st century—will further underscore the exceptional creativity of contemporary shoe design. Shoe Obsession will also include highlights from the incredible shoe collections of several stylish women, including jewelry designer Lynn Ban and fashion icon Daphne Guinness.  The exhibition is curated by Dr. Valerie Steele, director and chief curator, and Colleen Hill, associate curator of accessories. – Fashion Institute of Technology

First Family Continues to Stay Fashionable on Inauguration Day

Obama inauguration

Yesterday was an important day in American history as President Barack Obama was sworn in for the 2nd time on none of other than MLK Day.  While all eyes were on him as he took his oath and strolled back to the White House during the parade, my eyes were of course on Michelle, Sasha, and Malia to see what sense of style they were going to bring to Inauguration Day.  Luckily, they did not disappoint!

Staying true to their tradition of only wearing American designers, Mrs. Obama looked stunning in a navy-silk checked Thom Browne coat and dress that were inspired by men’s ties.  She added her own flare to the ensemble by adding a J. Crew embellished belt, Reed Krakoff boots, and a Cathy Waterman necklace.  When she went inside for the Inauguration Luncheon, she paired her Thom Browne dress with a Reed Krakoff navy cardigan that she had worn for the private Oath just the day before.  Seems to me like she’s taking tips from Duchess Kate on recycling pieces, and I love it!

As for the always impeccably dressed first daughters, Sasha is showing just how grown up she is with her fashion choices.  Sticking with one of her favorites, J. Crew, the eldest First Daughter chose a magenta coat and violet tights from the brand along with a sophisticated three-quarters sleeved navy blue dress. Continue reading

Golden Globes Fashion Re-Cap

Awards Season finally began last night with the always entertaining Golden Globes hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.  The hilarious duo did not disappoint and neither did the fashion!

So, let’s get right down to it and discuss some of the best and worst looks of the night.

Best Dressed

 1.    Jessica Alba

70th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Even though she was only a presenter, Jessica Alba looked stunning in a melon colored Oscar de la Renta gown and perfectly accessorized the outfit with a $5.8 Million Mrs. Winston by Harry Winston Necklace.

2.    Michelle Dockery

The nominated Downton Abbey actress wowed in an Alexandre Vauthier dress that really was a risk for the red carpet and it definitely paid off! The white and gold number fit her perfectly and showed what Hollywood glamour is all about.

3.    Kate Hudson

One of my personal favorite stars looked incredible as usual in an Alexander McQueen keyhole black and gold dress.  She makes dressing for the red carpet look effortless. Continue reading

The Golden Globes mark the beginning of my favorite season…Awards Season! Where else can you see all of your favorite stars dressed impeccably (well, hopefully) from head to toe?

Award season allows for every girl to play dress up in her mind and openly critique the outfit choices without feeling guilty. I mean if Joan Rivers can do it, so can we!

But before we can critique the fashion, we obviously have to predict what the hottest celebs will be wearing down the red carpet. Good thing Fashionista.com has some great ideas already! Check out their slideshow of options for this year’s nominees.

Come back on Monday to see if your predictions were right and who was Best and Worst Dressed!
